ABOUT
A historic location since 1830
Built in 1830 “The Eblana Lodge” went through a succession of owners from department store Switzers the Grafton street retailers once located where Brown Thomas is now trading (1850) to the Vance family of surgeons (1877) to Lt. General Henry Hall from the British Army to McCabe (1879) a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church becoming a club for social inclusion in 1910 which it operates as to this day.
Much of the Club’s history is captured in the book SOME GHOSTS FROM DÙN LAOGHAIRE'S PAST - from King Laoghaire to Ronnie Drew based on 200 years of the Eblana Lodge in Dùn Laoghaire by Breasal Ó Caollaí.
‘While our watchword will be progress, let us never forget our founders.’

history of the club logo
The evolution of Dún Laoghaire's town crest reflects its rich history and transition through time. Initially introduced in 1834, the crest represented the area under its former name, Kingstown, reflecting its status as a key Victorian harbor town. By 1900, as the town grew and developed, the crest evolved to incorporate maritime elements, emphasizing its coastal identity and links to Dublin Bay.
The 1930 redesign marked a more modern approach, aligning with Ireland’s broader cultural shifts post-independence. By 1980, the crest adopted its most recognizable form: a mix of historical and modern influences, maintaining its maritime themes but with cleaner, more streamlined designs symbolizing progress and renaissance.
For the Dun Laoghaire Club (also known as the Eblana Club), the logo incorporates elements from this crest, blending the town's maritime legacy and historical pride. The club emphasizes these connections, underscoring the slogan from its 50th anniversary: "While our watchword will be progress, let us never forget our founders." This demonstrates the symbolic link between the town’s evolution and the club’s identity
protected for the future generations
The Eblana Club is incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee without a shareholding and its property is vested in its members through the company. If the club were ever to be sold, the proceeds must be given to a similar institution or a registered charity. This protects the club for future generations. Membership is open to all subject to an acceptance procedure which takes about one month from application to acceptance.
The club is managed by a Board of Directors, elected annually at an A.G.M. where every registered member has one vote. The only person with a second vote is the chairperson’s casting vote whenever that is necessary.
The club’s meeting rooms are available to all, subject to availability. The club has recently reinvented its fine garden where garden parties, BBQs and other types of social gatherings can be booked.
As a private members club with a licensed bar, it is necessary for all members and visitors to sign-in at the door.
